3 Reasons Why Curved TVs are Rubbish Gimmicks

Are you thinking of getting a brand spanking new Curved OLED TV?

1. The Consumer Curved TVs are Too Small

Curved screens are not a new invention. The first real mainstream use for curved screens is with IMAX Domed Theatres.

Why are they curved? They are curved so that:

– It reduces the size of the screen required to maximise viewing pleasure in a given space and

– It envelopes your field of view, creating total immersion.

2. Therefore, Consumer Curved TVs Still Look Like Flat Screens

Don’t take my word for it.

Go to a store and stand in front of a normal flat screen TV. Take it in, then stand in front of a similarly sized curved TV. It still looks like a square doesn’t it?

As long as the screen isn’t big enough, all the BS the sales people and TV companies can talk about are thrown out the window.

3. They’re Trying to Maximise Profits… AKA Gimmicks

I’ve no issue with new technologies… as long as they make sense.

Like, the change from CRT to LCD was huge. It dramatically cut down the size and weight of TVs. You save space, it’s easier to mount it up walls, ceilings and other novel locations and because it’s so much lighter, it’s cheaper to ship and you don’t break your back moving it around. It’s no longer an eye sore as well. Everyone benefits.

But things like LEDs TVs (which are still LCD TVs, with a different bulb, and you guys pay 3-4x more just for a different bulb lol. LED DOES NOT EFFECT PICTURE QUALITY.), 3D and now Curved TVs are really just ways to make you spend more money on what is otherwise the same product.

Like I mentioned before, the main problem is size. If you’re gonna get a curved tv the size of your wall, sure, but if it’s what, 50? 60? 80 inches? Please… don’t waste your money.

A note on power consumption: It partly depends on the configurations of LED back lights used for your LCD TVs so I’m not really concerned about the power savings.

What You Should Be Looking Out For

OLED TVs are what you should be looking forward to. The short of it is that Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) screens combine the best of Plasma and LCD technologies, giving you the best of both worlds.

Yes yes, Curved TVs are OLED TVs, but the point is to not waste money on those that are curved.

So flat screen OLED TVs? Yes please, start buying, so that it becomes cheaper for the rest of us XD

Here’s youtube rant I uploaded not long ago about the topic. Please, enjoy XD
